The conflict in Northern Ethiopia has been ongoing since Nov 4, 2020 when an ethnofascist armed group, the TPLF, attacked the largest Ethiopian National Army Defense base located in Tigray, Ethiopia. The Tigray People’s Liberation Front dominated the government between 1991 and 2018, but were sidelined after years of protests. The group appears to have started the war to overthrow the democratically elected government of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed. The conflict is referred to by many corporate mainstream western media as a civil war, but as Nebiyu Asfaw, co-founder of the Ethiopian American Development Council explains, that is not an accurate term for the conflict. Asfaw says, “This is not a civil war. This is not a conflict within brothers and sisters. This is a fight for liberation. And Ethiopian people are resisting, the Horn of Africa is resisting.”
